Fluometer
For a school project @VIVES Kortrijk, I worked in a group of 4 students on a project for 2 semesters. The initial task was to come up with a way to motivate children to come safely to school. We came up with the Fluometer, a LED strip that serves as a visual indicator of how many students are wearing a high-visibility vest.
This works together with a wireless big red button.

I was mainly responsible for the electronics and PCB design but also helped with the wooden structure and firmware.
Fluometer PCB:
Everything is neatly tucked into the back of the Fluometer, paired with a transformer stepping down to 5V 5A.

Button PCB:
The button features a custom board with charging circuitry for the LiPo battery and a buck-boost converter for a longer battery life. Via an FPC cable it connects to an additional board that displays the charge status on the button.
This project turned out great, we went to 6 different schools in total to test out our Fluometer, collect feedback, and see how the children reacted to it. Small spoiler: they found it amazing!
We also had an action day where the press was present, and we had a bunch of articles written about it! https://www.vrt.be/vrtnws/nl/2025/12/11/fluometer-wielewaal-kortrijk-verkeersveilig/ https://kw.be/nieuws/samenleving/onderwijs/schoolactiviteiten/fluometer-op-kortrijkse-basisschool-moet-verkeersveiligheid-verhogen-halen-we-90-procent-dan-organiseren-we-een-filmnamiddag/ https://www.hln.be/kortrijk/fluometer-beloont-leerlingen-die-verkeersveilig-naar-school-komen-bij-hoge-scores-winnen-ze-extra-lange-speeltijd-of-filmnamiddag~a9f353cf/?sfnsn=wa&referrer=https%3A%2F%2Fstatics.teams.cdn.office.net%2F https://www.vives.be/nl/nieuws/fluometer-brengt-leerlingen-verkeersveilig-naar-school
